What started out as a single shellfisherman digging for clams on the shores of North Kingstown in the late 80’s has grown into a family run multi-fishery business. Captain Trip Whilden has been fishing in the Narragansett Bay West Passage for 30 years. He has two fishing boats: F/V Lucy Rose, a 42ft Novi Dragger and F/V Matrix, a 38ft Lobster boat. In 2014 he and his family expanded into oyster aquaculture and started growing farm raised oysters.
Formerly, doing business as Whilden Unlimited, he has changed the name to Whilden Fisheries to capture the true nature of his business. His Lobster business is branded End-O-Main Lobster, where the public can purchase fresh caught live lobsters & crabs directly off the boat F/V Matrix.
The oyster farm is branded Wickford Oyster Company providing “Fox Island” oysters to local restaurants. The F/V Lucy Rose catches species such as Fluke (Summer Flounder), Scup, Butterfish, Tautog, Black Sea Bass, Dog Fish, Squid, Sea Robin, Mantis Shrimp, Whelk/Conch and other sea critters. Some species we provide to Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown, RI. We also harvest Horseshoe Crabs for biomedical purposes.
In 2018, Whilden Fisheries will focus on keeping our catch in the local Rhode Island area providing fresh caught seafood to the local community. Why send it out of state or the country through the traditional food system, when we can feed Rhode Islanders? Visit Relish Rhody for more information on efforts in our local food initiatives.
We are working on becoming a community supported fishery where we will provide seafood in it’s whole natural form to consumers off the boat, at farmers markets or through home delivery.
